A City with Deep Mediterranean Roots

Istanbul, often called the crossroads of the world, has long played a significant role in the history of the Mediterranean. As a bridge between East and West, its influence on the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle is profound. The city’s cuisine reflects this, serving as a melting pot of Mediterranean flavors. From extra virgin olive oil to fresh produce and lean proteins, Istanbul’s culinary traditions are steeped in the very staples that define the Mediterranean diet.

Staying at The Bank Hotel, Istanbul

The Bank Hotel Istanbul, located near the Galata Tower and Bazaar, was the perfect home base for my journey. Its location provided easy access to iconic landmarks, like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. The hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Serica Restaurant, quickly became one of my favorite spots, serving modern Turkish cuisine rooted in ancient culinary traditions. As a restaurant owner, I truly appreciated the thoughtfulness behind each dish, where flavor and wellness came together seamlessly.

A Taste of Turkish Street Food: Lahmacun

A standout experience was my food tour with Secret Food Tours, particularly at a traditional Lahmacun restaurant, Borsam Taşfırın. Often called “Turkish pizza,” Lahmacun is a thin, crispy flatbread topped with minced meat, spices, and vegetables. What made this meal special was the ability to customize the flavors with bowls of fresh parsley and lemon served table side, creating a personalized, authentic dining experience. Paired with a cold glass of Ayran, it was the perfect way to enjoy the bustling energy of Kadıköy.

The Ferry to Asia: A Serene Journey

Taking the ferry to Kadıköy, on the Asia side of Istanbul, was more than just a way to cross the Bosphorus — it was a cultural experience. As I sipped Turkish tea and watched locals go about their routines, I felt a deep connection to the Mediterranean way of life, which emphasizes balance and enjoying simple pleasures. This ferry ride embodied the peaceful yet vibrant lifestyle that Istanbul, and the Mediterranean region as a whole, represents.

  • Borsam Taşfırın Restaurant: In Kadıköy, this spot serves the best Lahmacun, a quintessential Turkish experience. Each table is topped with bowls of fresh parsley and lemon, allowing you to personalize your dish to your liking.
  • Shopping in EminönüFor unique shopping, this is the perfect place. And for a stunning photo-op, be sure to rent a red flying dress from Istanbul Portraits.
  • Pera Palace Hotel Pâtisserie: A mix of modern and classic design, this hotel’s café offers indulgent treats like Mona’s Chocolate , paired beautifully with a rich espresso.
  • Big Chefs — “Eat Great, Feel Great” This farm-to-table project brings ingredients from women farmers directly to your plate. Don’t miss the red lentil and baby spinach soup, with lemon zest and spices like oregano and za’atar.
  • Shamse in Taksim Square For incredible Persian food, try Shamse. The Khorest Gheymeh stew, Shirazi salad, and refreshing Dough were some of the best I’ve had. The warmth of the staff made the experience unforgettable.

Istanbul Reflections

This trip was not just about exploring Istanbul’s sights and food — it was a deeply personal journey. Reflecting on my roots, I was reminded of the times spent with my grandmother, watching Turkish shows like Diriliş: Ertuğrul. My connection to the Ottoman Empire felt stronger than ever as I walked through Istanbul’s historic streets. Hearing the Adhan at sunset brought back memories of standing with my grandmother, Laleh Bakhtiar, in Isfahan, watching a rainbow over Naghsh-e Jahan Square. As the anniversary of her passing approached, I felt a sense of peace and gratitude during this journey.
